Energy bills to rise another 25%

There are ways to pay less for your energy despite the increasing cost of gas and electricity.

1. Compare prices
Although you may feel it’s best to wait and see if all of the big six suppliers will announce price increases in the coming months; time is money, so why wait?

Perhaps not all of the suppliers will announce increases – and some may wait until later in the year. And when it comes down to it, there’s nothing to stop you switching again.

2. First time switchers save more
Around half of all households are still to switch either gas or electricity supplier. If you have never switched supplier before, Energywatch says you could save around £90 by doing so (for standard credit customers).

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, says: “Take action now and move to a cheaper energy deal if you want to protect your household from the impact of higher energy bills. By not switching consumers could waste savings of up to £325.”

3. Check your payment method
Look at how you pay for your gas and electricity. You can save money by switching from standard credit or pre-payment meter to monthly Direct Debit or an online account.

Direct Debit, in particular, offers the added bonus for quarterly bill payers of spreading the annual amount over 12 equal monthly payments – so you’re not faced with very high bills over the winter period.
